Permit exemptions by state
A few states waive a building permit for smaller residential projects up to a set dollar amount. Most set minor-work thresholds locally instead. Here is where a statewide exemption applies, and a tool to check whether your project qualifies.
Florida

As of July 1, 2026, some single-family projects valued under $7,500 no longer need a building permit. Electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical, gas, and flood-zone work are excepted.
North Carolina

No building permit is needed for work costing $40,000 or less on a single-family residence, farm building, or commercial building, as long as it does not add or redesign structure, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical systems or add new roofing.
Other states set it locally
